Why a Bone Marrow Transplant?
Bone marrow is the factory that powers your body's immune system. Blood related cancers and diseases damage the marrow and the body's ability to defend itself. A body that's highly vulnerable to infection struggles to fend off even low grade threats.
Unhealthy bone marrow is first killed by chemo or radiation therapy, then replaced with fresh stem cells to build new marrow. Depending on the type of transplant, new stems cells can come from either the patient or a donor. Infused through an IV line, new stem cells migrate to bone cavities, repopulating into healthy new marrow.
