Colorectal Cancer
FHCI Leads the Way in the Fight Against Colorectal Cancer
According to The American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer-cancer that starts in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum (end of the colon)-is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States (excluding skin cancer). In 2009, they estimate there will be:
- 106,100 new cases of colon cancer (52,010 in men and 54,090 in women)
- 40,870 new cases of rectal cancer (23,580 in men and 17,290 in women)
Thanks to early screening and new, comprehensive treatments such as those offered at the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute, the odds of a successful outcome for people over 50 after a diagnosis of colorectal cancer have been increasing in the United States for more than 20 years. Today, in fact, there are more than one million survivors of colorectal cancer in our country.
This vital work continues at the FHCI's Colorectal Cancer Program. Our Colorectal Cancer Team includes experts who are among the best and most experienced physicians in the country. Our nurses, board-certified physicians and other cancer specialists are leading the way in developing advanced therapies for the continued fight against colorectal cancer.
FHCI means care by colorectal cancer experts
The management of colorectal cancers typically involves a variety of specialists, whom we have integrated into our Colorectal Cancer Team. These specialists include primary care physicians, gastroenterologists, enterstomal therapists, radiologists, pathologists, colorectal and general surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists.
Our specialists lead the way with breakthrough research and advanced therapies. From diagnosis through treatment and survivorship, our Colorectal Cancer Team's comprehensive care includes access to the latest clinical trials and minimally invasive procedures such as endoscopic ultrasounds.
Your Colorectal Care Coordinator is your advocate for quality care
Our cancer specialists work as a team to develop the most effective, individualized treatment plan and are committed to caring for each patient with respect and compassion. So at the FHCI, colorectal cancer patients enjoy the benefits of a Care Coordinator to guide you through the entire process.
Patients with an abnormal colorectal screening or a diagnosis of colorectal cancer will be faced with the challenge of making treatment decisions during what is likely to be a stressful time. Your Care Coordinator will be here to assist you along the way by performing the following services and support tailored to your individual needs:
- Provide rapid scheduling of appointments, tests and procedures
- Offer information about symptom management
- Provide ongoing disease information, education and support services
- Arrange for psychological and nutritional counseling
Whether helping you navigate through necessary tests and procedures or just sharing a heart-to-heart talk, the care coordinator is your advocate who ensures that your care continues quickly and smoothly.
