Thoracic Cancer Program

Making a Difference for Patients with Thoracic & Lung Cancer

At the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute (FHCI), we offer our thoracic cancer patients access to more comprehensive services, advanced technology and breakthrough research than any other program in our community.

The Thoracic Cancer Program at the FHCI offers a variety of therapy choices for patients. In addition to caring for patients diagnosed with thoracic cancer, we are actively involved in clinical research to seek new ways to detect, treat and prevent this disease. The FHCI offers a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists and a complete array of patient and family support services to heal the mind, body, and spirit of our patients.

What is thoracic cancer?
Thoracic cancer includes many different types of cancer that involve the thorax, or chest region. Our team of thoracic cancer experts is trained in all types of thoracic cancer care, including lung cancer, esophageal cancer and mesothelioma.

Each year, more than 213,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. In Florida in 2007, lung cancer and bronchus cancer were the most frequently reported cancers, with over 17,400 cases diagnosed.

At the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute, we’re working to improve the prognosis of lung cancer patients through innovative diagnostics, treatment options and research.

Thoracic Cancer Team
We know that thoracic cancer patients often need a combination of therapies – from surgery to radiation to chemotherapy in order to combat this disease. That is why we’ve formed a Thoracic Cancer Team of the country’s leading experts in the field. This team meets regularly and works closely together to manage each patient’s individual case.

Primary care physicians, thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, medical and radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, and pathologists work alongside oncology-trained nurses, clinical research nurses, patient educators, social workers and other cancer specialists to provide care. Through this multidisciplinary team approach, we deliver more powerful and effective treatment plans that can lead to better outcomes for our patients.
