Thoracic & Lung Cancer Team

The Thoracic & Lung Cancer Team at Florida Hospital, which is comprised of the country’s leading thoracic and lung cancer experts, meets regularly to discuss cases. This means that our patients benefit from the input of a variety of experts from different specialties. Since patients with thoracic or lung cancer often require a combination of therapies, our multidisciplinary approach allows members of the Thoracic & Lung Cancer Team to deliver a much more powerful and effective cancer diagnosis and treatment plan for each patient.

The Thoracic & Lung Cancer Team is made up of physicians from many different specialties of practice, such as primary care, thoracic surgeons, pulmonology, and gastroenterology which specialize in diagnosing and treating lung conditions and diseases. Florida Hospital radiologists provide diagnostic imaging and perform procedures to diagnose thoracic cancer, and pathologists confirm the presence of cancer and determine the stage of the disease. Medical and radiation oncologists develop treatment plans using the best forms of medication or radiation therapies to combat invasive cancer. The involvement of the physicians with different specialized expertises offers thoracic cancer patients the most advanced, effective treatments.

Thoracic & Lung Surgery

Thoracic surgery is the practice of medicine directed toward the surgical treatment of diseases of the chest including cancers of the lung, esophagus and chest wall. The board-certified thoracic surgeons on the Thoracic Care Team at the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute specialize in the treatment of lung and esophagael cancer. Our surgeons treat the most difficult cases and have become experts through their high level of experience with thoracic surgeries.

For lung cancer patients, a thoracic surgeon may remove a lobe of the lung (lobectomy), an entire lung on one side of the chest (pneumonectomy), or just the part of the lung affected by the cancer.

Esophageal cancer is increasing faster than any other cancer, and is among the most deadly cancers. Our thoracic surgeons are also very experienced in operations to remove a part or most of the esophagus.

The thoracic surgeons on our Thoracic Care Team work closely with our radiation and medical oncologists to develop an individualized treatment approach for each patient.
