What's the Purpose of a Bone Marrow Transplant?
A bone marrow transplant procedure may be performed in order to replace bone marrow that either is not working properly or has been destroyed (ablated) by chemotherapy or radiation. Bone marrow is the factory in your body that powers your immune system. When the marrow becomes damaged, either through cancer or another disease, your body’s ability to fend off or fight infection becomes seriously compromised, so much so that even a low-grade threat can become life threatening.
To restore immune system so you can effectively fight infections, the blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) experts at the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute (FHCI) utilize the most advanced therapies and procedures available to treat your cancer aggressively so that your immune system can operated normally.
Your physician may recommend a bone marrow transplant if you have:
- Certain cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma
- A disease that affects the production of bone marrow cells, such as aplastic anemia, congenital neutropenia, severe immunodeficiency syndromes, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia
- Had chemotherapy that destroyed your bone marrow
