ORLANDO, Fla., July 6, 2016 — Florida Hospital is pleased to announce Dr. Mark A. Socinski has been named executive medical director of the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute. Socinski will coordinate clinical services for the Cancer Institute’s Central Florida locations and provide leadership to a team of roughly 230 physicians.
“I am looking forward to working with the physicians, nurses, support staff and administration at Florida Hospital to bring the Cancer Institute a higher level of prominence,” Dr. Socinski said. “Our collective efforts will continue our journey toward becoming a nationally recognized leader in cancer care.”
Socinski specializes in thoracic malignancies, including small cell and non-small cell lung cancers and mesothelioma. He has extensive experience in research and clinical trials, and has spent more than 20 years in academia.
“Dr. Socinski brings decades of experience in patient care, research and leadership to the Cancer Institute,” said Florida Hospital Vice President Kari Vargas. “We are confident he will help further cement the Cancer Institute as a destination program known for providing patients with compassionate and state-of-the-art care.”
Socinski most recently served in various roles at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, including professor of medicine and cardiothoracic surgery, and director of the lung cancer section at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
Socinski previously served in academic roles at the University of North Carolina Department of Medicine and the University of Vermont.
He graduated from the University of Vermont and completed an internship, residency and fellowship at Harvard Medical School, and also a fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
